That's a Wrap: NASCAR 2018 Finish Line and the Road Ahead

When he was a kid, Joey Logano knew he would be a race car driver. When he first got behind the wheel of a go-kart, he knew he would win a championship. Now, his life-long ambitions have become fully-realized.

The November 18th race at Homestead-Miami Speedway marked the grand finale of the Monster Energy Cup season where No. 22 Logano achieved his dream to take home the coveted Cup Championship. With a career fraught with challenges, including past run-ins with other drivers and bitter rivalries, his journey to champion did not come easily. To make things harder, he was up against 3 drivers who dominated the entire 2018 season.

Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick, and Kyle Busch owned the year with 20 wins between them. Named “The Big 3,” fans had their eyes on these guys throughout the season as potential champions. Logano was certainly the underdog, but that changed at Martinsville with a dramatic win, clinching a spot in the Final Four (watch the final laps from that race here).

This goes to show the unpredictability of the sport – anything can happen. Logano hopes to use his new-found moment in the spotlight to not only act as an ambassador for the sport, but for helping others through his new foundation. But don’t feel too bad for “The Big 3” – Truex, Harvick, and Busch rounded out the top 4 at Miami.

The Miami finale marked the end of another chapter in NASCAR history - Jimmie Johnson completed his final race with crew chief Chad Knaus. Together the legendary pairing celebrated 604 starts, 81 wins, and 7 championships. Johnson is looking forward to a clean slate in 2019, while Knaus takes 21-year-old William Byron under his wing. Byron, who was named Rookie of the Year at the Cup Awards, will be the driver to watch as he enters his sophomore year as a Monster Energy Cup driver.

That’s a wrap on another phenomenal NASCAR season! But there’s no rest for fans, as the Daytona 500 is right around the corner. They’ll be closely following the headlines as drivers and their teams prepare for more rule changes ahead in 2019 designed for tighter racing, more competition, and more excitement.
